Your plan, and what it covers

What your plan includes, where the Smarty Pants allowance goes, how to use a code, and what happens if the allowance runs out.

The short version Plan sits in the top bar, which is on every screen. It shows what you are on, how much of this month's Smarty Pants allowance has been used, and every plan you could move to. If you have a code, type it into Have a code? before choosing a plan. Only the account owner sees this screen.

What is on the screen

Three panels, in the order you need them.

Panel What it tells you
Your plan The plan's name and price, how many students it covers, its monthly Smarty Pants allowance, and how many papers you have left to import this month. Underneath, the date it renews — or the date it ends, if you have cancelled.

The paper figure is the one that actually stops an import — twenty a month — rather than a number on the plan, because those two used to disagree and the screen was showing the one that never said no.
Smarty Pants this month A bar showing how much of the allowance has been spent, and a plain line saying what happens when it is gone. It resets at the start of each calendar month.
Change plan The code box, then every plan available to you. Your current one is marked Your plan rather than offering a button.

Using a code

  1. Type it into the box

The box is above the plans, under Have a code? Capitals do not matter — a code typed in lower case, or capitalised by a phone, is the same code.

  2. Press Apply

It tells you what the code is worth straight away — "25% off", or "1 month free" — and then says choose a plan below to use it. If it is not a code we recognise, or it has expired, or you have used it before, it says which of those it is rather than just refusing.

  3. Then choose your plan

The code is applied to whatever you choose next. Remove clears it if you change your mind.

Checking a code does not use it up You can press Apply as many times as you like to see what a code is worth. A code is only counted as used at the moment a plan is actually granted — so looking at one, or opening a payment page and closing it again, never burns it.
One code per account A code can be used once per workspace. If you have two accounts, a code used on one is not available on the other.

What the Smarty Pants allowance actually pays for

Smarty Pants is the helper a child can ask when they get a question wrong. Every question in the library already carries a written explanation, and that is what a child normally reads. The allowance pays for the times Smarty Pants writes a fresh explanation for the particular thing that child got confused about.

Running out never refuses a child When the allowance is spent, Smarty Pants stops writing new explanations. Your students still get the written explanation on every question, exactly as they always do. They see no error, no message, and nothing telling them something ran out. The bar on your screen is the only place it is visible.

That is deliberate and it is not going to change. A cap that refuses help lands hardest on the child who asks for help most, who is by definition the child who needs it most. So a limit here changes what a child gets, never whether they get something.

Changing plan

Press Choose on the plan you want. If your plan is a paid one, you are taken to a payment page and back again; if you are moving between two paid plans, the difference is charged straight away rather than quietly appearing on next month's bill.

Once you are on a paid plan, Manage payment details appears — that is where you change a card or download an invoice.

If a student limit stops you Some plans cover a set number of students, and adding one past that is refused outright. This is the one limit in Strivli that says no, and it is safe to do so because it refuses you, at a keyboard, with a clear reason — never a child mid-question.

A place is freed when a student is archived, but there is no button for that yet — the student page today has Print report, Invite a parent and Get a join code and nothing else. Until it exists, get in touch and we will do it, or move to a plan that covers more.

Cancelling

Cancel plan is on the first panel. You keep everything you have paid for until the end of the period — a plan paid to the 30th works until the 30th — and then the account moves to the free plan. Nothing is deleted. Your students, their practice history, your notes, your branding and your own questions are all still there.

Questions people ask

Why can't my colleague see the Plan screen?
What a workspace pays is the account owner's business. A tutor added to your account teaches; they do not see or change the card. If you need somebody else to handle billing, they need to be the owner of the account.
The screen says nobody is being charged.
That banner means no payment provider is connected to this installation yet. You can choose and change plans and everything works, but no money moves and anything set up that way is marked so it can never be mistaken for a real subscription.
My card was declined — do my students lose anything?
No. A failed payment leaves your plan live while it is sorted out. Degrading a tutor's students the minute a renewal bounces would punish children for an adult's expired card.
Does the allowance carry over if I don't use it?
No — it resets at the start of each calendar month.
A code says it can't be applied to a paid plan.
That code has not been set up with the payment provider yet, so it cannot reduce a real charge. We refuse it rather than taking full price from you and leaving you to spot it on a statement. Get in touch and it will be sorted — you are not charged in the meantime.
Where do I see what I have actually spent on Smarty Pants?
The bar under Smarty Pants this month, which shows the amount used against the amount included. It is an estimate from usage rather than an invoice, and it moves as your students practise.
